First Animation

I’m taking a class on computer animation. This is the first time we were able to create our own motion sequence. I had fun doing this, but man did it take a long time. Still needs some polishing though. I’m not sure if I am completely satisfied with the squash and stretch. And also the arcs of the small ball are all wrong.

Conceptual Design of Blake Revisited

This is the conceptual design of Blake revamped. I gave him some dreads. I don’t know if this is the final design, but it’s pretty damn close to it. It may need some tweaking. Also, the image lacks personality and emotion. Better get on that, as well as some full body shots. A profile shot and a 3/4 shot.

Blake is the type of guy who likes to keep to himself and does not like to be disturbed. If he were to use one word to describe himself it would be “seeker.”

Concept Art for Graphic Novel

I’ve been working on the concept art for the graphic novel I plan to do for my senior thesis at Amherst College. These are the sketches I’ve done so far for one of my characters, Phoenix Kwan. He’s the character I would say is closest to my heart. When I was ten and wanted to produce my own comic book he was called Blue Streak and had a kind of manic personality, bouncing off the walls and getting on other people’s nerves.

In my graphic novel he’s going to be the fun-spirited guy of the group, an Aquarius, from Los Angeles who loves partying and meeting new people. A little nerdy from computers and electronics to comic books and cult films and tv shows. Once you get this guy talking you won’t be able to shut him up.

Asterios Polyp

I just finished reading David Mazzucchelli’s first graphic novel called Asterios Polyp. It was a really great read that explored concepts of duality, the intersubjective space, and religion. But not only the content the form and styles that Mazzucchelli used throughout were incredible. Depending on where Asterios, the main character was, the color palette would change to take on the personalities involved. Asterios’s color was a cyanic blue. The dominant color for Hana, his ex-wife, is red. When Hana talks the speech bubble is round and organic. Asterios’s speech bubble on the other hand is always square with hard edges and lines. The graphic novel is in many ways about two lives coming together. About how the people we are with change us in many ways. I think I’m going to read this graphic novel back over to look at the subtleties of form that I might have missed while I was focusing on the content of the story rather than form and see what gems I pick up.

2012 visual effects

Saturday I got to see the 2012 movie. The visual effects in that movie were the most photo-realistic I have ever seen and the entirety of the disaster scenes were done in cg. I found it amazing how seamlessly they were able to blend the cg with the live action to perfection. And while watching the movie on the big screen I found myself marveling at how much time and how big a team of artists it must have took to render the visual effects of the movie so photo-realistically.
